Igor, in the context of this project, what requirements prompted the search for solutions to house wheeled containers?
The project provides for the collection of used kitchen oil in PET bottles, which are then recycled so they can be used again.
The containers that collect the bottles users use to dispose of exhausted kitchen oil are wheeled street containers and have 240L capacity. Designed to safely handle this type of waste, which is heavy and tends to create a lot of soiling, they are placed in specific strategic positions in order to make public cooperation as simple, fast and effective as possible.
For this reason they are placed near the entrances to commercial establishments and inside service areas: so their purpose is to provide a safe solution that is easy to manage and brings decorum to the area, both in terms of aesthetics and cleanliness.
BIOX FOR USED KITCHEN OIL COLLECTION
A solid positive relationship unites Mattiussi Ecologia and the company BIMAS d.o.o., which for over 13 years has presided over the Slovenian market with competence and professionalism. Over the years the partnership has been further consolidated and strengthened, opening up to increasingly broader and more interesting solutions and territories. A particular case in point, due to the rapid spread and current relevance of the topic, is the creation of a simple, effective and highly appreciated system – both in terms of function and aesthetics – for the collection of used vegetable oils and the initiation of the process of recovering these for use in the production of biofuels.
The peculiarity of the project is characterised and determined by the Biox model, designed and manufactured by Mattiussi Ecologia with a special focus on a sleek and elegant design, high quality materials and finishes and use intended for commercial and institutional settings and historic centres, where the preservation of the landscape and decorum form an essential element.
The Biox line consists of shelter modules for wheeled street containers ranging from 240 to 1100L, featuring superior finishes and various options for disposal and access control, not least in the applied technology variant - called Biox 4.0 – with electronic lock and dedicated sensor system.
Let’s hear the story from Igor Jarc, owner of BIMAS d.o.o. and originator of this project and relating campaign, which has involved a number of important players, including in territories in nearby Hungary.
What type of entity manages this type of collection?
The company that manages this type of collection, which we developed this project with, is a well-established private enterprise that deals with the collection of waste oil and organic waste, with an organised and well-structured operation employing over 50 people on Hungarian territory.
In what settings are the collection stations installed?
As mentioned, the choice of where to position collection points was the focus of a detailed study and evaluation from various aspects. Locations needed to be identified that would enable users to easily bring full bottles of used kitchen oil from their homes and easily, cleanly dispose of them without having to carry them for long periods of time, with the risk of them accidentally opening and spilling.
At the same time, an effort was made to ensure that collection would bring a sense of decorum and doing something worthwhile, while guaranteeing a clean, practical, complete system that would enhance locations and was at least partly supervised.
For this reason locations were chosen where people could approach the collection points using their own vehicles or public transport without having to carry the bottles long distances and could leave them in the dedicated containers while they ran errands or took advantage of other services
Has there been an improvement in terms of quantity and quality of waste collected? To what extent?
In terms of effectiveness and efficiency, the project has been a success in every respect: local people were able to make use of a new service, the collection company was able to benefit from a new catchment area and in fact a new, complementary collection system was established, starting completely from scratch.
It is a source of pride and satisfaction for us: we were able to offer the right solution to achieve this result but also for the territories that had the foresight to understand the many benefits of this new service.
The option to provide a high level of customisation of the Biox modules, with clear instructions and references to sustainability and company and public participation… made all the difference in this respect.
What use is made of the oil collected?
The oil collected is sold to refineries present on the territory for the production of biodiesel, which due to the portion of raw material from the separate collection of exhausted oils, benefit from a manufacturing process that is more efficient and cost effective.
In terms of ease of use for users, decorum and usability for employees, how do you rate the solution proposed?
The solution was immediately well received and accepted by all the participants. Indeed it is appreciated that from the design through to implementation, the fact that the modules had to be easy for users to use and ensure a quick, safe and protected collection procedure for operators was clearly borne in mind. What was particularly welcomed, in contrast to settings that house collection points, were the aesthetics, materials, the option to customise and the care taken over details and finishes.
Will the system be able to integrate or be scalable into a broader future project for integrated, synergistic and timely collection?
Absolutely yes, precisely because of the significant results this project is achieving, both the collection operator and the companies housing the collection points have expressed interest in further developing the same solution – also on other markets.
Lastly, it should not be ruled out that there may be reason to manage collections of other special yet valuable forms of waste, using the same principles and Biox lines along with complementary equipment.
The versatility and construction quality of the Biox modules in fact make them suitable for any application
Our thanks
go to Igor for the dedication, professionalism and quality with which he carries
out his work every day and for taking the time to talk to us about this
successful case.
Moreover,
it is worth mentioning that in order to be able to sustain these projects, a
number of different elements need to be combined: experience, specific know-how,
innovation and production capacity, integrated with a timely monitoring of
supply chains.
Last
but not least, it is very important to be able to have the opportunity to offer
support of an advisory nature and identify technical, technological, financial
and operational tools: in this respect Mattiussi Ecologia has been committed, every
day for 40 years, alongside professionals like Igor, to fleshing out valuable
projects and making them successful.
